My Proposal
Women on weights and being athletes in general have a contemporary importance in society especially for athletes like myself. When I think about this topic, I think of my experience of being in the weight room with a whole bunch of sweaty men. I feel that the gym is categorized not only to separate cardio from actual muscle building, but also to have women in the cardio room and men in the room with all the weights surrounding them. This makes the weight room feel exclusive meaning it’s an “invitation only” room to the male species.
My overall vision I have on women on weights is that females should not be looked down upon while working out whether one is doing a cardio exercise or pushups or even doing bench press. Equality is not present in gyms because everyone stereotypes by gender and one’s ability to do a workout based on their gender. Women, in my opinion, are considered to not be able or even capable of doing half the things men do. During this proposal, I expect to find images such as women holding light weighted dumbells considering we aren’t capable of lifting heavier weight or images of body builders, which may cause one to question if they are female or male, or images of women doing things like yoga and pilates. |
By looking into this topic, I am taking the risk of being laughed at by men anywhere who workout and believe that women only belong in the cardio room to “lose weight” or simply believe that women can’t or shouldn’t lift weights because it doesn’t “fit” in the female gender role. The audience I am addressing is not only the women who workout in the world, but also the men who workout. I want the men to give me feedback whether it may be positive or negative With this video, I can bring images that would be unexpected like a female benching as much as the man next to her who has been working out way longer. I can also bring sources from YouTube that promote women in the weight room and how it benefits not only men, but women as well!
Overall, I feel the point of me researching and doing my mash-up video assignment on this particular idea is because I feel it is interesting and it is also still a reoccurring problem for women everywhere. Also, I can personally relate to this entire topic on addressing one’s comfort zone. This comfort zone, for this topic, for us women needs to be BROKEN. Once one keeps putting themselves in an uncomfortable situation, it becomes comfortable! I want to promote women health, particularly in the lifting weights area, and this is my opportunity to express my opinion about the topic and not only help other women in building up their courage to go in the weight room with confidence, but also build my courage as well as my confidence.
